Most of us, however, take life for granted. We know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future. When we are in buoyant health, death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it. The days stretch out in an endless vista. So we go about our petty tasks, hardly aware of our listless attitude toward life.

I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight; silence would tech him the joys of sound.

我常常想，如果每個人在他成年的早期有一段時間失聰失明。那會是一種幸事，黑暗會使他更珍惜視力，寂靜會教導他享受聲音。

Now and them I have tested my seeing friends to discover what they see. Recently I was visited by a very good friends who had　just returned from a long walk in the woods, and I asked her what she had observed.. "Nothing in particular, " she replied. I might have been incredulous had I not been accustomed to such reposes, for long ago I became convinced that the seeing see little.

我曾不時地詢問能看見東西的朋友們，以了解他們看到什么。最近，我的一位摯友來看我，她剛從一片森林里散步許久回來，我問她看到了什么，她答道:“沒什么特別的。”若不是對這種平靜習以為常，我會覺得難以置信，因為很久以來我已確信這種情況:能看得見的人卻看不到什么。

How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk for an hour through the woods and see nothing worthy of note? I who cannot see find hundreds of things to interest me through mere touch. I feel the delicate symmetry of a leaf. I pass my hands lovingly about the smooth skin of a silver birch, or the rough, shaggy bark of a pine. In the spring I touch the branches of trees hopefully in search of a bud the first sign of awakening Nature after her winter's sleep. I feel the delightful, velvety texture of a flower, and discover its remarkable convolutions; and something of the miracle of Nature is revealed to me. Occasionally, if I am very fortunate, I place my hand gently on a small tree and feel the happy quiver of a bird in full song. I am delighted to have the cool waters of a brook rush thought my open finger. To me a lush carpet of pine needles or spongy grass is more welcome than the most luxuriousPersian rug. To me the page ant of seasons is a thrilling and unending drama, the action of which streams through my finger tips.

我問自己，在林一了吧散步一小時之久而沒有看到任何值得注意的東兩，那怎么可能呢?我自己，一個不能看見東西的人，僅僅通過觸覺，都發(fā)現(xiàn)許許多多令我有興趣的東西，我感受到一片樹葉的完美的對稱性。我.用手喜愛地撫摸過一株自樺那光滑的樹皮，或一棵松樹的粗糙樹皮。存天。我摸著樹干的枝條滿懷希望地搜索著嫩芽，那是經(jīng)過嚴冬的沉睡后。大自然蘇醒的第一個跡象二我撫摸過花朵那令人愉快的天鵝絨般的質(zhì)地，感覺到它那奇妙的卷曲，一些大自然奇跡就這樣展示在我而前。有時，如果幸運，我把手輕輕地放在一棵小樹上，還能感受到一只高聲歌唱的小鳥的愉快顫抖。我喜歡張開手指，讓清涼的溪水從指縫間流過。對我來說，一層茂密的松針葉或一塊松軟而富彈性的草地比最豪華的波斯地毯更受歡迎。對我來說，四季壯觀而華麗的展示是一部令人激動的、無窮無盡的戲劇。這部戲劇的表演，通過我的指尖緩緩流出。
